“Galo” , a Portuguese noun meaning rooster or fowl. Galo restaurant specializes in flame-grilled Latin Chicken thus the name. Owned by Chef Couple Karen and Aris Carino who got their spurs from CCA, they embarked on conceptualizing and putting up their own restaurants beginning with Mazza (Mediterranean inspired) some 5 years ago. Emboldened by Mazza’s success which now has 5 branches , they opened Galo in Mckinley Grand Canal Food Hall in 2016. This branch in Legaspi is their 2nd. Last Wednesday February7, per the invitation of Zomato , we tasted the following :
Croquetas P145
I loved the presentation. The inclusion of parchment or was it wax paper (?) was
a good call. It served its aesthetic purpose at the same time
absorbing all the oil from the deep fried croquetas.
Those balls of Spanish goodness were crunchy outside and moist inside.
This was a fun way to start your Latin Food experience.
Galo Sisig P195
So Pinoy, I wondered what it was doing in the menu. But the inclusion of
the corn answered my query…. Mexican-influence right there
Chili con Carne Quesadilla P170
Aha moment! Why didnt I think of this before? Definitely replicating at home.
This was so delicious!
Whole Chicken and Chips (grilled or fried ) Patatas Bravas P675
Chicken was moist. Skin held all the flavor. Do not forget to pair the chimichurri
with the chicken for that Latin flavor. Patatas Bravas looked eerily like
Shakey’s Mojos. I still like Shakey’s better
Galo Chops 2 pcs with 2 sides P210 or P175 with rice only
Pork Chops were so delicious, flavorful and cheap for 2 pcs of that beautiful meat and fat….
yumyum! Pair it with chimichurri.
Ribs BBQ choice of 2 sides P295 with rice only P260
Ribs were fall of the bone and bbq sauce was scrumptious.
Lechon Asado (crispy) with 2 sides P275 with rice only P240
Lechon Asado were crispy but portion was rather small. I would
rather order the pork chops
Lomo de Porco 2 skewered pieces with 2 sides P210 P180 with rice only
Simple presentation. Loved the grill marks and chimichurri on the skewered meat.
Pork was juicy.
SUMMARY:
Food was generally delicious and prices affordable.
Ambiance was simple. I loved the colorful
mosaic-tiled floor , rainbow-hued clear bottles on the wall and red and white tiled chicken
logo right smack on the middle. Windows were huge letting the natural
daylight in. Ceiling was high giving the place a spacious feel
Gallo is connected to its sister resto Mazza by a clear indoor window and a common door,
kitchen and restroom. You can cross order if you want.
Overall a pleasant and enjoyable lunch spent with foodie friends.
I would highly recommend this to friends within the
area who love good Latin food with generous serving
that are less than P300 per order.
